Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in India where a sister ties sacred thread around brother`s wrist as a symbol of protection while the brother promises to protect and take care of her. It falls on the Shravan Paurnima of the Hindu lunar calendar.
Significance and purpose of Raksha Bandhan
The brother pledges to protect the sister and the sister prays for his well being. Since the historical ages this custom is prevalent which makes the brother sister relationship so strong. The rakhi is a symbol of the purity between the siblings.
Religious actions performed during rakhee
The brother is made to sit on a wooden stool for tying the rakhi and a rangoli design is drawn around this wooden stool.
Both brother and sister pray to the deities for the protection of each other.
The sister applies tilak of vermillion to the brother and ties the rakhi on the right wrist of her brother.
After tying the rakhi, a ghee lamp arti is waved in front of the brother to ward off all evil from his vicinity.
The brother then gives gifts to his lovely sister and ends the festival.
