Jal Jhulani Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi (Eleventh Day) of the Shukla Paksha (Bright Half) of the Hindu month Bhadrapada. This day is of great significance in many Rajasthani temples. It is believed that the one who observes the fast on this day gets blessed with immense happiness and good fortune. Also there is this another belief that Mata Yashodha washed Lord Krishna`s clothes on this day. Hence the name Jal Jhulni was associated to this Ekadashi.
The celebration
Devotees carry out a Shobha Yatra (Honor Journey) with a Palki (Palanquin) of Lord Vishnu on this day. Also His idol is bathed outside the temple. Devotees perform with flowers, incense sticks, earthen lamps, rice etc.
On the eve of Ekadashi, devotees set up seven earthen filled with seven different cereals viz. wheat, gram, barley, rice, urad, moong and masoor.
On the next day, the idols of Lord Vishnu are placed on these seven urns and worshipped. Devotees perform Jagaran of Vishnu Path all night long.
The fast of Padma Ekadashi begins from Dashami (Tenth Day) and concludes on Dwadashi (Twelfth Day). After the eleventh day (Ekadashi) is over, all the urns are donated to the Brahmins.
The Legend
It is believed that Lord Krishna took Gopis in Vrindavan for boating on Yamuna River and in return demanded yoghurt. So people donate and share yoghurt on the day.
The idol of Krishna is also taken to a lake or river for a ride and worshipped as part of puja. Some temples in Rajasthan conduct special pujas and processions on the day.
