How Hanuman Rescued Shani Dev from Lanka

It was Lord Shiva and Brahma’s boon that made Ravana invincible. And when his son Meghnath was about to be born, he wanted a similar fate for his son as well.

To get it into reality, Ravana captured all the 9 planets and placed them in the 11th position to make his new born immortal and invincible.

Of the 11 planet, there was Saturn or Shani Dev who was captured as well. Ravana placed them in a spot where it would be very difficult for them to get out.

Meanwhile, Lord Hanuman reached Lanka in search of Goddess Sita. He found Lord Shani Dev in the basement of the palace of Ravana and rescued him.

It is also said that Lord Hanuman did not burn down Lanka but Shani Dev did. Lanka was made of gold and gold cannot be burnt.

Shani Dev is known for the characteristic that whenever he gets angry, he burns stuff. When Shani Dev was leaving wherever his drishti fell, the place started to burn. And this is how Lanka was all burnt.

As a thank you gesture, Shani Dev gave a boon to Lord Hanuman saying that his inauspiciousness will never affect him in any way.

Lord Hanuman in return requested Shani Dev that none of his devotees should be affected as well, to which Shani Dev gladly obliged.  This is the reason why people Shani Dev do not cause adversities to Hanuman devotees.
