The ancients believed that life is made up of four essential and basic elements-fire, air, water, and earth-and they have divided the sun signs accordingly:
Fire signs: Sagittarius, Leo, and Aries.
Air signs: Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini.
Earth signs: Taurus, Capricorn, and Virgo.
Water signs: Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio.
Note that Aquarius is not a water sign. Though it does represent the water bearer, it is actually an air sign.
Element Compatibility
If it's friendship you seek or love from a partner, a sun sign will hardly be enough of an indication as to whether or not the union will be a positive one. Some of the best couples around are Sagittarius and Pisces (fire and water), or Aries and Virgo (air and earth).
Though, theoretically, these love matches shouldn't work by virtue of their utter opposed outlooks on things, they sometimes just do. Perhaps it's thanks to that old saying that opposites attract; more likely, you'll have to delve deeper into both individuals' charts to find, in fact, that there are other corresponding signs throughout them that help make the partnership thrive.
How does this work? Let's say that your chart is replete with the elements air and water. Your boyfriend's birth chart, instead, is mostly earth. For all intents and purposes, this love arrangement shouldn't work, right? Not necessarily. For instance, the only earth element you have in your chart is in Mercury.
Although this may not seem as important as having a compatible sun or moon sign, Mercury is the way in which you communicate. And good communication, we all know, is one of the keys to success in a healthy relationship. Don't discount a new lover or friend based solely on their sun sign or ascendant. You may miss out on a great opportunity to create more happiness for your future.
