An Astrologer/serious student of astrology is supposed to predict: (a) nature of event and (b) time of likely event. Both the things depend to a great extent on proper application of Dasa.  Here, we are talking about Vimshottari only.

In books including classical astrological works results, which are mentioned, are generally based on natural zodiac - not individual zodiac in terms of birth chart and inter-relationship of the two planets.  These common results and sometimes one finds just totally reverse results.

How to predict specific, precise and accurate timed events, is a not very difficult, if one has the patience and time on one hand and in depth idea of the subject.

There are certain steps to reach precise and specific prediction.  I am enumerating hereinbelow:-

There are various systems of Dasa Periods.  Amongst them, Vimshottari Dasa is generally applicable to all.  Naturally, it occupies prima position.
    
But there are as many as 9 other Nakshtra based Dasa Systems.  They are as under:-

1.    Ashtottari
2.    Shodashottari
3.    Dwadoshhatri
4.    Panchottari
5.    Shatabdika
6.    Chaturshiti-sama
7.    Dwisaptati-sama
8.    Shasthi Layani
9.    Shadvimsha-sama

2.    Chakra Dasa
3.    Chara Dasa
4.    Sthir Dasa
5.    Kendra Dasa
6.    Karaka Dasa
7.    Brahmgrah Dasa
8.    Mandork Dasa
9.    Shoola Dasa

11.    Drig Dasa

GOOD AND BAD RESULTS OF DASA LORD

WHEN DASA LORD IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE FAFOORABLE RESULTS

1.When any planet is moving from its debilitation point to exaltation point (Arohi) - near exaltation point better it would be.  
2.Planets nearer to Bhava Madhya are more efficient in their Dasa ect.
3.Planets having five or more than five Bindus in the rasi in which they are placed give good results - quality improves if the planet is placed in Bindu - Prastar and Dasa Lord etc. take colour of the planet giving Bindu Bala.
4.Planets placed in 10th and 11th from Lagna and/or Moon give good results.
5.Planets placed in their exaltation sign, own sign and in signs of their friends give good results.
6.Planes getting 'Shada Bala' give good results according to the nature of 'Shada Bala' gained.
7 (i)'Shubhas' not suffering from Kendradhipatya Dosha placed in Kendra and Trikona from Lagna and/or the Moon give good results.
(ii)'Ashubhas' owning Kendra and/or Kona placed in these Kendra and Kona houses from Lagna and/or the Moon give good results.        
NOTE: (i) Rule No.4 and 7 should be seen from two angles Lagna Chart and Moon Chart, while considering Dasa and from three angles when considering Antar from Lagna, the Moon and the Dasa Lord, while considering Pratyantar 4 Lagna, the Moon, the Dasa Lord and from the Antar Dasa Lord.  Quality of these results increases and decreases with more favourable points.

8.Planets placed in 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th Nakshatra from Janma Nakshatra.
9.Planets placed in this exaltation sign, Moola Trikona Sign or in friendly sign but neither placed in 6th, 8th, 12th, nor combust are known as 'Gocharastha' plants and give good result.  Planes placed in 'Neecha' sign (without Neecha Bhanga) or combust or placed in 6th, 8th or 12th are called "Agocharastha' and they tend to cause agony, depending on other 'Shubha' and 'Ashubha' influences.


WHEN DASA LORD IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE UNFAVOURABLE RESULTS

(1)Lord of the sign where 'Mandi' or 'Gulika' is placed is supposed to give unfavourable results, according to Jataka Parijata.
(Sept. 1990 A.M. 686) ('Mandi & Gulika' same) (Kalidasa of Uttarkalamrita takes them separately) ('Mandi' in horoscopy 'Gulika' in Mahurta).

But Mantreshwar in his Phala Deepika XXV Shloka 30 says wen his dispositor occupies Kendra, Trikona, exaltation or own house or friendly sign in strength, he confers Raja Yoga and makes a native attractive "Sunder", famous and gain position and landed property.

(2)Planet placed with Mandi.
(3)(i) Planets having less than four Bindus in its Asthaka Varga.
     (ii)Planet placed in enemies' sign, or in its debilitation sign.
     (iii)Planet combust.
(3)Planet placed in Bhava Sandhi or Rasi Sandhi.
